The Identity Series: Who am I?

I am convinced that the leading problem in America lies in our personal identities.

We really don’t know who we are and in a more profound sense we don’t know whose we are! I am not going to take the time here to debate the issue of God or his son Jesus. If you are not at the point of believing in God or his Son I offer you all the grace and patience in order for you to do your own research to confirm or debate this issue. It has taken me a long time to get to this point so I fully understand where you are at and offer my friendship and resources if you would like to dive into this subject. However, if you have come to the point where you believe in the Trinity; God the father, his son Jesus and the Holy Spirit then lets dive right into what this really means to all of us.

What I a want to help you arrive at is how much you received when you made this choice and what authority and promises are now yours…

Frankly you have gone from rags to riches!

You have moved from pauper to prince, from the identity of an orphan to a child of adoption and from victim to victor. We need to learn how to deal with this new inheritance. If we do not, we will continue to live in a powerless position that has guaranteed our place in eternity but trapped in a prison of perfectionism and disappointment; saved but not empowered. When we walk in the truth of our inheritance we become transformed from the inside out. We literally become a new creature, mind body and soul. If you have not felt this experience then I want to help walk you through some of the stages I have gone through to break off old ungodly beliefs. UGB’s.

Most of our lives we have been convinced we are insignificant and that our opinions really don’t matter. Suddenly we are thrust into a new realm through our conversion that teaches us differently but our minds are still stuck in the old belief system. Unfortunately when a prince acts as a pauper he will more than likely hurt or destroy the very people he is leading. Sadly this came to reality in my life.

As I grew into a significant level of leadership and influence my broken spirit acted in a careless way that led to results that would alter my life forever. If we are saved but not transformed the mind that was acting out of our orphan spirit continues to make decisions that are selfish and harmful.

What do we receive through salvation?

You see, when we receive salvation from God we are transformed and we are washed clean, but for most of us our experience ended there and then it restarts with a list of new rules and punishments. We go from the prison of sin and selfish acts to the prison of shame and fear placed on us by organized religion. It is this fear-based tactic that kept me, and I am sure many others, a long ways from the love of God. God gave us the keys and set us free but unfortunately most of us just change holding cells.

Our minds stay bound by the shackles of shame and regret because we haven’t come to the realization that what really happened is the wall that kept us from constant intimacy in the presence of God has been destroyed. We are now family and we are in his presence 24 7. We are in Heaven with Jesus and he is involved in every single part of our lives. He doesn’t hide his eyes when we sin and he does not rear back with a hand of punishment. He loves us so thoroughly that all God sees is his perfect Son when he looks at us. We are now sons, brothers to Jesus and Prince’s to the king.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 peter 2: 9,12

Our Identity has been changed; we are now in the royal family. When we come to this realization we develop our new identity and from this truth we grow a new life and life style! It no longer becomes discipline but just a matter of fact of who we are and how we act as a result of this transformation. It is a totally effortless expression of the new royal prince you have become. The way we behave has always been an outward expression of how we see ourselves. Let this continue to be the case as you move ahead as the favored son of the King of the Universe.
